genYOU Story 17 – Hollie

We’re kicking off 2018 with a genYOU Story from communications whiz Hollie Heales. We’re envious of Hollie’s dream work experience at Disney’s Magic Kingdom and her ambitious attitude has given us the courage to jot down a few more #goals.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and where you are headed in your career right now?

My career thus far has been a result of saying “yes” to new opportunities!


In 2013, I completed my studies with a Bachelor of Communication and throughout my degree – like many other students – I liked to keep busy! I interned and volunteered for non-profits, local government and publications where I supported with events, marketing, writing and internal communications.


When I graduated, I decided to apply for the Walt Disney World College Program and re-located to Florida for 6 months to complete work at Disney’s Magic Kingdom. My time at Disney was incredible and allowed me to connect with people from around the world and make amazing friendships.


I learnt an extraordinary amount about time management while balancing 50 – 60 hour working weeks and completing two college classes, while spending every other waking moment hanging out at the Disney parks or exploring the States.


When I returned from Disney, I started my position as an Account Manager, working at a social media and digital marketing agency.  My experience working at my current agency has been remarkable and I’m super lucky to be surrounded by an amazing team.


During my time in this role I’ve worked with clients in FMCG, beauty, lifestyle, non-profit, health, local government, food… the list goes on. I love learning about different areas of the marketing mix and recently I completed additional studies in digital marketing including SEO, display ads and analytics.


Aside from social, the aspects of marketing that excite me the most include events and activations because I love working with thriving communities. Travel and tourism industries are also future aspirations of mine.


How has or how is generationYOU helping you achieve your goals?

I first attended a generationYOU event in April 2017 and I enjoyed hearing personal stories from the speakers; particularly business owners and founders of start-ups. I was inspired by their learnings from successes and failures.

I continue to read genYOU stories regularly as it’s always fun to hear about other millennial’s career journeys and the unique paths they have followed.

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

There are so many people that inspire me! I love people who aren’t afraid to live by their own rules and stay true to their own internal compass. Trailblazers who break the boundaries and move away from the status quo, as well as those who dream BIG!

As a huge Disney fan, I must say that Walt Disney is a massive inspiration to me. He is an amazing example of what you can do if you start small with unique ideas, unwavering dedication, passion, creativity and of course – some hard work and grit. His legacy continues to live on through the amazing places, stories and characters he and his team created. The Disney brand continues to amaze me with its ability to constantly reinvent without straying away from core visions and values.

What is the one piece of advice you would love to share with your millennial peers as you reflect on your own journey?

Look at every experience as an opportunity to learn – if you try something and you don’t like it at least you know for next time. This is something I try to remind myself of when a situation is not going the way I had planned or when I need to repeat a repetitive task – at the very least I can learn from my experiences. Learn from work, life, travel, friends and even the most mundane of tasks!
